چکیده

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the vast blue expanse of ocean—the last frontier—is not as inexhaustible as it once seemed. While we have yet to fully explore the reaches of the sea, technology has granted humans the ability to harvest its wealth. We can now fi sh anywhere, at any depth, for any species. Like the American frontier range’s bison and wolf populations brought to the brink of extinction swordfi sh and sharks are the ocean’s most pursued prizes. The disadvantages associated with the depth and dimensions of this open range, however, have long obscured the real consequences of fi shing. Indeed, scientists have the formidable challenge of assessing the status of species whose home covers over 75% of the earth. Three recent highly publicized papers—a trifecta detailing troubled waters—call attention to overfi shing’s contributions to the dramatic declines in global fi sheries. Delving into the past, Jeremy Jackson and colleagues (2001) combined local historic records

Fisheries in Troubled Waters : a Catch Reconstruction for Guinea - Bissau , 1950 - 2010

Marine fisheries catches of Guinea Bissau were reconstructed to account for sectors that have never been considered previously. Two main sectors were identified, the large-scale (industrial) sector, which includes foreign industrial catches, the catches of so-called ‘domestic’ vessels, and the discards they both generate. The other main sector is the smallscale sector, including subsistence, re...

The Spatial Expansion and Ecological Footprint of Fisheries (1950 to Present)

Using estimates of the primary production required (PPR) to support fisheries catches (a measure of the footprint of fishing), we analyzed the geographical expansion of the global marine fisheries from 1950 to 2005. We used multiple threshold levels of PPR as percentage of local primary production to define 'fisheries exploitation' and applied them to the global dataset of spatially-explicit ma...

The effect of climate change on sharks stocks in the Iranian waters of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman

Global warming and climate change affect aquatic stocks´s growth, biological activity and physiological behaviors because aquatic CPUE is influenced by physical and chemical factors such as temperature, salinity, wind speed and its direction and sea current. In this research, the relation between the time series shark CPUE data in the Iranian waters of Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman with the env...

The Global International Waters Assessment for the Pacific Islands: aspects of transboundary, water shortage, and coastal fisheries issues.

Aspects of transboundary, water shortage, and fisheries issues are discussed in the context of the recently completed Global International Waters Assessment (GIWA) for the Pacific Islands. The region encompasses some 30 million km2 and approximately 12% of the world's ocean space, and features great geographic, demographic and developmental diversity. Global change, especially sea level rise an...
